Hadrian's Wall, Pennine Way, Northumberland, England.
Hadrian's Wall (Latin: Vallum Aelium) was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, begun in AD 122 during the rule of emperor Hadrian. In addition to its military role, gates through the wall served as customs posts.
Hadrian's Wall Country stretches across the north of England from the west Cumbrian Roman coastal defences at Ravenglass, through Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport to Bowness-on-Solway, along Hadrian's Wall through Carlisle to Hexham in Northumberland and on to Newcastle upon Tyne, Wallsend and South Shields.
Just to the east of Milecastle 39 on Hardians Wall can be found Sycamore Gap which can be reached from Steel Riggs car park, traveling west past Housesteads Roman Fort on the B6318 Steelrigg is sign posted just before reaching Once Brewed, entering the car park head towards the right hand corner were a walkway heading down to the left will take you to Milecastle 39 then over the next hill will be found Sycamore Gap also known as the Robin Hood Tree as it appeared in the 1991 film Robin Hood Prince of thieves, which starred Kevin Costner.
